Today we try and get YaYas computer fixed again. Not today..geez, this CNY thing drags on forever.

We take him to the western café that does awesome Belgian ice cream but he declines, ice cream is for children he says..

'Ellies' cafe is out of almost all their ingredients after a hammering on CNY weekend, so we make do with a juice and coffee.

We try to set up Yaya with paypal so we can transfer money direct to his bank account, a rarity for most rural Khmer. (both the money and the bank account)  Paypal .kh only accepts links to credit cards, which is a bit ridiculous given few have a credit card, let alone a bank account !!

“What you want to do Mr. YaYa?”
“Movie, movie !” he responds excitedly. Ok.

Off to the cinema again and this time to watch the latest Wolverine movie. There are no screenings in the main theatre so we ask if we can show YaYa the full size screen upstairs, yes you can, and in fact you can watch the movie up there if you like. Awesome, the cushioned platform is even bigger, the screen is 4m wide and the sound is great. And we have it all to ourselves !
Wolverine is a much better movie, action, gangsters, shooting, fighting , swords, the whole shebang. YaYa is wide eyed and really taken by the whole thing. We think we have created a movie monster.

Going past Rusty Keyhole bar we see a sad and sorry young tourist, barefooted and staggering with a huge cut above his eye. Noone else even seems to notice let alone care. He’s a very swervy and lost soul indeed.

It’s YaYas birthday this Friday coming so we head off to the phone shop to get him a birthday pressie. He's already asked for a phone – the one thing he wants to have his cachet with his well to do young schoolfriends. The shallow desires of youth even extend to the backwater of Kampot.

What would be a simple transaction in Oz turns into a convoluted 2 hour debacle – some of the phones don’t work, despite all being the same model they have different builds and OS’s on them, some of them have Khmer menu items, completely unusable to me, it’s a schmozzle. But cheap…

We both get a new Samsung S2 each and YaYa seems happy – its got all they apps and toys he needs and won’t his friends be impressed !

I soon discover YaYa’s cautious and mysterious checking of each and every phone is standard practice here – he’s actually ended up with the better phone and latest OS, but when we were buying he wouldn’t let me in on his little phone checking secrets.
My phone is plainly South Korean and keeps prompting whether I want to make a call in Korea or elsewhere. It’s got heaps of pre-loaded crap built into the OS from the South Korean phone company – but at least it’s not in Khmer !! It will do – it was $130 US. That’s a pretty big deal as we discover later from the young Khmer staff, Sokha, back at Greenhouse. A really big deal. $130 is a LOT of money here.
We have just bought YaYa a device that 95% of rural Khmer only ever dream about. I hope it does'n't go to his head, and I hope it keeps working cause I'm not buying him another.

I also now have a camera – being without one on holiday felt like I had lost an appendage.

We meet up with the seedy expats late in the afternoon having a drink with Darren at WunderBar and share a couple of beers.

One of them is an oversized and outrageous German(?) who is the manager of Bokor Hill Station, one is a Khmer who runs bicycle tours and appears quite normal, and Darren of course. They are all a bit mad, if amusing, in their own peculiar ways, and I without hesitation join in the lurid, abstract and pointless conversation.

YaYa is concerned this could turn into a bunch of 'Bad Uncles' and a long night, we assure him we won’t be long and he relaxes a little. YaYa is such a nice kid.,  and wise to the world of the seedy expat. “Bad Boys” he explains to J-she, I’m pretty sure he’s referring to me also !

Off home and on the way we see the staggery injured boy again, looking even worse than before trying to get into the driveway off his guesthouse – 2 steps forward, 2 steps back, 2 steps forward, 2 steps back…we leave him tottering in the dark like a human pendulum, slightly worried he may well be dead tomorrow…either from the massive head wound or he might just get cleaned up by a passing vehicle if he doesn’t eventually manage to make that 3rd step forwards!
We again manage to sneakily avoid the evil beckoning lure of so-frenchy so-chic and their mischievous ways at the bar and retire to bed.
