Amber had studied here a few years ago (just before we met in Vietnam) and had commented on how much had changed since then. She did get to catch up with some of her old students and Lear (her language partner) who took us out to a very lovely restaurant. Our time here was spent DVD shopping and even made time to experience a Chinese zoo. Conditions obviously were not as good as in western zoos as some enclosures were cramp and dirty but what suprised me was how the zoo show included some bears cycling whilst the trainer stood on the pegs of the bike. There was also a tiger riding on top of a donkey. Oh you could also have your picture taken with the tiger for a $1 which I had to decline for obvious reasons.
Oh almost forgot about my poisonous mushroom hot pot experience. A speciality of Kunming, I had to give it a go and figure out if mushroom with green spots are bad for you. Unfortunately when I tried to describe the poisonous mushroom in Mario Bros they looked at me blankly and instead offered me the 20 other different poisonous mushrooms. Naturally we got the most poisonous ones which had to be cooked longer then normal so that the poison was cleared, how do they really know that? I am pleased to say that we are alive and well and have not had any hallucinations or feelings of euphoria...yet.
