Our plane was delayed for only 5 hours but we counted ourselves lucky as there had been people stuck at the airport for more than 2 days and they were still there when we left. A familiar face from Sydney picked us up from the airport and it was good to be in his company once again. Beldon had been making his way and having a good time in Beijing for the past couple of years and it didn't take us long to hit it out on the town although our ladies did not feel like joining us (not planned) for the night. At the club I was surprised to see Chozie who I had not seen for over 7 years! He has been happily building his career in China and has part ownership in the club. Being old and boring (much to my delight after a long ordeal at the airport) we retired upstairs on to the roof terrace and talked to the early hours of the morning.

Getting back in to tourist mode did not take long as we made our way to the Forbidden City 00 Beldon and me in my going out shirt =)

. A massive complex which was unfortunately mostly under restoration we were met by the usual touts and annoying toy sellers selling magnets which they threw up in the hair and it makes a sound similar to that of cricket. It was peak season and we had to push and shove our way along with everyone else to get prime photo taking positions. Amber says there were well behaved compared to before and we were able to find moments of peace if only for a couple of minutes.

Out of the Forbidden city, I searched, probed and asked numerous people but unfortunately no one could direct me to the spot where the infamous protester who stood in front of the tank in Tiananmen square lay.

There are three main areas to visit the Great Wall and we choose the one at Simaitai. It was a relatively clear day and the short hike up to the wall from the entrance was easy enough. However we had to set ourselves realistic distances as the wall did literally go on for ever. The steps gradually became steeper and the rocks more loose the further you got away from the main area. I have to admit that I did not venture too far out, only 4 outposts, as I was out of shape and too used to the easy life. The scenery was breathtaking with rolling green hills and this massive structure which was built on top of the highest points in the land and connected for as far as the eyes could see.

Also went to the Summer Palace where the Royal family spent their summer vacations. Two things worth noting are the marble bridge which spanned for 17 arches and a solid marble boat which was allegedly made with the funds reserved for the Chinese navy.
