We arrived by night train from Chiang Mai into Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya is built on an island and is surrounded by rivers.
We took a boat tour on the river and saw lots of interesting temples, buddas and ruins (cant wait for Angkor). On the boat we met Dave from Oz. Dave decided he liked us and travelled with us for a couple of days. The next day we rented some bikes and cycled around more temples, this revived our cycle muscles somewhat. It was incredibly hot and humid. We found a swimming pool that foolishly allowed us to swim there for 70baht. We practiced the art of what the Dutch call 'bommetje' (Attempt to create an as large as possible mini-tsunami by throwing yourself in the pool). We quickly had the pool to ourselves and enjoyed the welcome break from the pressing heat.
The temperature here is constantly around the 30degC and the relative humidity never falls below 80%. A cold drink condenses as much water from the air as is contained in the glass (I didn't actually measure this, but it is a good estimate). Even though you're glass isn't that cool, it looks like it is ice cold beause of all the drops on the glass. (Apologies for the slightly thermodynamic excursion....) After 2 days we decided that we had seen the place sufficiently and we pressed ahead to Kanchanaburi. More thumbnails ...
