After a night to forget in a little almost backpacker-style accommodation, we were relocated to the more impressive Hotel Albatross situated just across from the wharf where the MV Expedition would carry us off to the uber adventure in store for us, namely Antarctica.

We spent the day exploring Ushuaia which is a quite quirky little place that is right at the bottom of South American Argentina.  It is nicknamed World's End and the architecture is pretty freelance and designed for the snow it lays under during its long winters.  There are snow capped peaks around and the city itself floods if the snow melts too quickly in spring.

I was surprised by the size of the place and it is full of quirky graffiti and dogs - yep, the dogs are quirky too.  The supermarkets are one of the joys I have found as we travel to different countries and Ushuaia has some great ones.  There was a supermarket there that I would recommend you use if you are ever on your way to Antarctica.  They had ever type of thing you could need for your journey at Target prices!  If only we had known, it would have saved carrying some stuff all over the many other places we've been!  Still you can't know it all.

The town seems to have many different shopping centres but where we were based was mostly catering to tourists.  There is a naval base and a jail that used to house some of Argentina's worst criminals.  It is a museum and art gallery now but more of that in a later post.

The thought that we are heading out into the Drake Passage and out into the big wide ocean tomorrow is just thrilling.  We are going where few have been before on seas that are notorious!!!  How terribly exciting!
