Where I stayed

I have already written this once, and lost it on the ether, so now for the reader's digest version.
Just a drive through La Paz and there is this place that is simply eroded clay mountains.  The spikes of clay are supporting rocks of various sizes that keep them protected so they don't wash away in the rain.  If that is a sentence you can understand, you are obviously not as tired as I am!  We wandered around The Valley of the Moon and wondered a the quirky shapes that are formed.

We also got a bit cultured and went to a museum that described the main features and history of La Paz in miniature models and photographs.  No photos allowed, but there were some classics.  The traditional dress for women here has morphed over the years and our guide, Gissell, can tell where someone is from by the style of their clothes.
Next stop was the witches' market.  If you are at all squeamish, do not check out what is in this photo.  (Renee, Jacqui, just don't go there!). It was a fascinating shop filled with all the items necessary for offerings just like the Shaman used.  There were many jars of indescribable and unrecognisable substances as well as some objects of abject beauty.

We visited the town square, a real predictable feature of all South American towns, it seems.  It had some fabulous statues of the Liberator, whose name I can't remember, and some female Gods, each symbolising elements of the environment.  There were many pigeons and many people.  La Paz is our first city not focused on tourism, so it really felt like we were seeing the real place and people.
