In Indiana we passed through another Amish community, not a very large one though. In Illinois we went to Dwight, on old Route 66. Nothing much appeared to be open so continued on our way.
Today we travelled near the Mississippi for a good part of the day, going from Illinois, in to Wisconsin then in to Iowa
Just before crossing the State line in to Wisconsin we came across a beautiful town called Galena, old buildings & shops that you don't see everywhere else. It was quite busy, being a Sunday & Mothers Day. When we first drove into town we passed through some large gates & thought it must have been fortified at some stage, but turns out they were for flood control. One of the photos I have included shows the gates & just to the right on the wall there is a mark for the high water level of 2011. Further south we noticed some of the houses on the edge of the Mississippi were built high off the ground but were surrounded by water so are not sure if the river level is a lot higher than it usually is.
We've probably had our coldest day of the whole trip today. It was lovely & sunny but the wind felt like it was blowing off snow. The nights have been a bit cooler as well but the next day or 2 are supposed to be heating up to the 80's, possibly low 90's. We heard that Niagara Falls was only 48 today & snow showers so are extremely glad it wasn't like that when we were there. We're heading west now, across to South Dakota.
