Friday, June 8, 2012

It was very foggy this morning as we set off for Stewart & Hyder, two towns only about 5 kms apart with Stewart being in Canada & Hyder in Alaska& not much in either town. You don't have to pass through customs going into Hyder but you do coming back in to Stewart. Called into the visitor information in Stewart, the lady there had lived there for most of her life & was a wealth of information.Down at Hyder they have a viewing platform where you can watch the bears feed on salmon from the river, unfortunately the salmon don't start till mid to late July so there are no bears feeding. Also they were doing roadworks so that would scare anything off. None of the few shops even appeared to be open, think they wait for the bears.
On the way into Stewart you pass by a glacier called Bear Glacier, very impressive.Camped at a Safeway in Smithers tonight, they actually have a sign up saying free overnight camping for RV's, but there was only 2 of us there. We're out of the snow covered mountains now & into farming country, lovely & green but we're a bit disappointed to see the snow go. The weather has warmed up considerably, we did get to use the doona we bought, while we were in Alaska but it wasn't as cold as we were expecting, think we were lucky.

Boundary Gallery on

Sorry to have missed you. Boundary Gallery is open 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, all 12 months of the year.
The salmon are in and the bears fishing.
The road is still under construction, but the bears don't seem to mind and the wait times are short.
Hope you come back agin!
