There was no delay in leaving the Sun and we were through immigration in 20 minutes with finger prints, thumb prints and photo but surprisingly our cases were not screened. We got a yellow cab to the Amtrack station which was about a 30 minute drive away. We were there by 9.30 and had 2 hours to wait but the time passed quickly and we were away right on time at 11.50am.
Our Viewliner roomette as you might guess from its name is compact to say the least. About 1200 by 2200. However it is very comfortable and we had the best nights sleep of our train travel so far despite the movement and incessant horn blowing from the locomotive. With a folding washbasin and hidden toilet we have all we need. The shower at the end of the coach allowed us to freshening up this morning. We dined last night at 7.30 as we arrive in Orlando. The meals are very nice and large servings and included in the price of $460 for 2 for 30 hours. For lunch I had chicken schnitzel with mash and salad while Mary had clam chowder and salad. apple pie and ice cream followed. dinner was lamb shank for me while Mary had the salmon and salad. We were up at 7 and at breakfast by 7.45. We had a taste of grits but didn't think too much of them. Mary had porridge, fruit and raisin toast with tea while I had the omelet with bacon and potatoes, coffee and croissant. At Raleigh we got off to stretch our legs and take a photo or two.
Our journey has taken us north from Miami to Tampa and on to Jacksonville last night then into South Carolina and North Carolina where we had reached Southern Pines at 7am. We are now in Virginia and approaching Petersburg with Richmond to follow.
The countryside is ever changing with cultivated fields, pasture and lots of woodland with autumn colours appearing on the trees. Numerous small and medium sized towns roll past as we head north through Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark and at 7.10pm we arrive at Penn Station New York. After a half hour wait for our bags we were on our way in a yellow cab to our hotel in Central Park West.
We enjoyed the trip and found the staff very friendly and helpful especially our coach attendant, Dean who was most helpful in pointing out features along the way. A great way to see the countryside and if time was available the journey could be broken up into 2 or more days allowing more site seeing. Now it's time to explore some of New York over the next 3 days.
