Friday Aug 3. Left hotel at 5.40 and taxi to Station. Now on Special express 13 to CM, due to leave in 2 minutes. We are in first class sleeper but we have adjoining compartments with an interconnecting door. We are off! 2 minutes late only!!
A slow trip out of BK with lots of stops. Beds were soon made up and were quite comfy though the pillows were rather on the hard side. If you lost your sense of smell then a trip to the toilet would be just ok. Mary says it makes her gag. Dwellingup long drops do not compare. Swaying, clunking, jerking and lurching made sleep difficult but the night went quite quickly and we were awake at 6 when it was quite light. Landscape is now hilly and forested with cropping on the valley floors and lower slopes. Rice, maize seem to be the main crops and settlements are fewer and smaller. Train is much slower now only about 40-50 kph with numerous curves and track works. Vegetation is so lush it regularly brushes the side of the carriage. It has rained in the night but is fine at the moment but cloudy.
We have just had breakfast served - eggs with sausage, ham and toast plus fruit, tea/coffee. We are now about 90 mins out of CM and enjoying the lush green scenery set to music from our iPad. Very relaxing.
Just arrived, right on time to discover this is not CM and then when I ask the guard he laughs and says 2 hours more - a delay! Glad I asked!
Well we finally arrived nearly 3 hours late and after a discussion with 5 taxi drivers about where our condo was we set off and after numerous phone calls by the driver he finally got us to Twin Peaks and we had a lovely welcome from Kong and a very nice 1 bedroom apartment on the 6th floor overlooking the courtyard pool. We were out at the markets just down the street last night and had a Pad Thai and beer for 180b( $6) Certainly not worth cooking dinner.
We have been using the pool and found a larger supermarket less than 20 minutes stroll away this morning. Bought enough for breakfasts and lunches and we'll logout again for dinner later. Our first objective this week is to get our visa's renewed for 15 days so we can stay till the do that we have to take a minibus to the Burma border and cross and come back. It will cost about 1200b each but that is the cheapest option. Lesson for Thai travellers check out visa requirements carefully if you are planning to stay more than 15 days. Had we flown in there would not have been a problem as you get 30 days coming by plane!!?
