An invitation to watch some cricket in Hong Kong was just too good to turn down, as I'd not seen either for a while and felt like I deserved a break. The opportunity to see Brian Lara and Shane Warne in action made it even better. The weather was great, event well organised and more than interesting enough to keep not only myself, but also my wife - who had no idea about the game - entertained. They were even giving me vouchers to spend on food and drink. Wonderful!
However, the best part of the whole trip was the fact that Hong Kong was so busy this weekend due to conferences, exhibitions etc. We were forced to look away from our regular Kowloon accommodation options and ended up deciding to stay on Cheng Chau. The traffic free island brought a whole new perspective of Hong Kong to us, from families eating at open air seafood restaurants next to the harbour, to the pleasantly winding footpaths, to the almost complete peace. I was woken up by the noise of the waves gently breaking on the beach beneath our hotel. This is not at all like downtown Hong Kong you will find yourself falling over endless entertainment, but for a weekend break in good weather it is perfect.
Cheng Chau was a world away from the expat dominated cricket in Kowloon, but together they made for a great weekend. I even found the shopping interesting!
