My love affair with rugby has rather got lost in my love affair with my new wife and the time differences between France and China. Even on my stag night I contrived to miss my first opportunity to see some World Cup rugby. So as we headed out to the bar I felt a combination of pleasure at the opportunities to catch up with Tom and Shelley and to actually see some rugby mixed with trepidation that everything I'd read online suggested England would take a hammering from Australia.
In fact, so certain were Tom and I that Southern Hemisphere dominance would prevail, that as we explained to the girls how the tournament worked and how it would play out, we promised that if England beat Australia, and France beat New Zealand, we'd take the girls to Paris for the England v France semi-final. I can honestly say that we were still sober at that point. Oh we of little faith! When I surfaced on Sunday afternoon, there was the question on my phone...Are we going to Paris then? Alas, getting a visa for my Chinese wife is not realistic in such as short period of time, and that's the only reason I'm not going to Paris - honest!
