Sometimes teaching is hard work. Sometimes it's frustrating. Sometimes your students or the subjects teach you a lesson or remind you of something that's valuable in your own life. That is precious.
I was doing some work on public speaking and making speeches with my class and was using Baz Luhrman's "Everybody is Free to Wear Sunscreen" as an example of an alternative kind of speech. And there were the words, right in front of me, "Keep your old love letters, and throw away your old bank statements." I.e. Some things in life are valuable, and some things aren't.
And so today I had coffee with my ex-girlfriend. We hadn't spoken for 3 months. Meeting wasn't dramatic or painful, and once we'd both fumbled through the initial, uncertain conversation, we found that the friendship and shared consideration of one another is still there. Sure, I'd been mad and sad when we split, but now I know I still have a good friend. Life is better for knowing that.
