Everything happens for a reason! I complain as much as the next man about the weather, but I love it when it's horrible, cold, wet and windy like today because when you're sat in the office working on a Saturday afternoon and you know you'll be back on Sunday you don't mind quite as much. To live in England you have to be stoical about the weather, not only because it's idiosyncratic but because the stoicism is a time-honoured, deeply embedded feature of daily life. What is much less frequently voiced is the truth that our friend and foe in the sky helps you to be stoical in other avenues of life. Working on a weekend is not my chosen pastime, but my state of mind is saved by the fact that I'm not staring through the window at blazing sunshine, knowing that London is bouncing in happiness and expectation of the coming summer.
