When in China, there's no discounting the importance of food. Many locals will greet you with, "hello, have you eaten?" This corresponds to the weather obsessed British pleasantry, "hello, nice day isn't it?" Knowing that food would be a major part of my stay I thought I'd keep a diary of food in pictures. Not necessarily the weird stuff, but some of the things you get everyday from all corners of the country. I can guarantee 99% of them have never been seen in your typical "Chinese/Cantonese Restaurant" in Western Europe or anywhere else for that matter.

Food defines much in China, not least it's provinces, but I even learned that this extends to different approaches to cooking on the BBQ. Cook over a roarting flame and not just hot coal??? My goodness, in serious BBQ'ing locations like Australia, I've heard they use different types of charcoal to regulate the heat for cooking, but here it's just the height at which you hold the food and your tolerance of heat that determines the temperature at which you cook.

It feels like I've been eating nonstop since I got here and I've actually been telling people I can't meet them to eat otherwise a meal will be generously sprung on you at any hour of the day. If I carried on eating 3 or 4 dinners a day I wouldn't fit back on the plane to England! Now, there's a thought. Suffice to say, the food's great and I'm thoroughly enjoying this integral part of life in China.
