It must come as a pleasure and a surprise to any adult to learn that they have become a grandparent. I can confirm this from personal experience. Furthermore I can declare that it's astonishing to learn of this news when you didn't even know you were a parent either. Yet this weekend I did indeed become "Opa". Andreas spent all weekend trying to get little Eleonora to call me by my first name and she would point to me if asked, "where is Robbie?", but when asked "who is that?", the answer was always "Opa". I may not be in my first flush of youth but it was nonetheless a bit harsh to suggest I look that old. It was a relief to my terribly damaged ego to find that every adult Eleonora met was a grandparent. I suppose that when you haven't reached your second birthday everyone looks incredibly old. Actually, come to think of it, the only person Eleonora didn't call "Opa" was her mum. I wonder if Martina is teaching her this deliberately to make herself sound and feel younger than all us grandparents that visit her daughter???? I shall have to have words on the subject I feel.

Nonetheless, in spite of all the sleights on my age, becoming a grandfather was good fun and a pleasant surprise. For all those who know Andreas, it will be no surprise that I wined and dined amazingly well all weekend, and it took a couple of days after drinking cocktails that comprised as far as I can recall consisted of Brazilian rum and not a lot else - excellent! I think I was still drunk when the Champagne came out for a wonderful brunch including the delicious brotje (or however you spell it) when Opa Mich and Opa Chrissy came over.

I was feeling pretty lousy at times before and after this weekend, but sometimes when you're flat it's ok because you don't have to pretend with good friends and there was so much cheer and laughter and happiness that you can only feed off the vibes. Sometime yo hope to be able to repay the shared warmth.
