The French talk about metro-boulot-dodo. Quite literally the daily life of a commuter, subway-work-sleep and nothing else. I'm working in Glasgow so have my own variation which is the weekly life of the commuter, plane-work-hotel-work-hotel...-plane. For a couple of weeks, it's a novelty and it's nice to be pampered and to be given free alcohol, but it wears thin very quickly when you're doing it on your own. I'd rather be sat around a cheap stew and stay in a bunk house dormitory with a bunch of friends than spend someone else's money on deluxe hotels on my own.

There are of course worse ways to spend your time, and some people swear by and crave for this kind of pampered, consumer lifestyle, but I'm pretty ambivalent about it. The thing that feeds my current spleen, however, is the mind-numbing work I'm doing. If it was high-octane, high-pressure, time consuming stuff I could go flat to the metal all day and enjoy the relaxed pampering of an evening. It's not like that though. I'm working with people who live metro-boulot-dodo, and fair play to them for having their personal and family priorities sorted and getting out of the office at 5.30. This however, doesn't tally with what my brain wants or demands at the moment.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was a bundle of enthusiasm, but it's being leached out of me so quickly it's not true. A lesson in management I should say, or rather, how not to! I have to look forward to Christmas and a change of scenery at the end of January. Until then, all I've got is my dream pipe. My what? Yes, my dream pipe. It's an image I like to hold to cheer myself up. If I live only in the here and now, I'll go up the walls, so I stuff my dream pipe full of things to look forward to at weekends and work and live for those special times. Some people will prefer to relax and do nothing, but I'm restless and just want to do and go... To this end, I've booked myself trips to Granada and Paris. I can't wait, and if ever I get down then I can inhale from my dream pipe and look to the future and feel better...
