Outside is a dusty building site, next to another building site, next to another... Inside, is marble, cool air, immaculate service and the biggest hotel suite I've ever stayed in. China is a land of remarkable contrasts and this oasis of calm inside a 5 star hotel insulating those inside from the cacophony of new development and the day-to-day life of the hutong. There is a time to explore everything, but here I can sit in the hotel I'm treating myself to for a mere £45 a night and wallow amidst the pile of pillows taken from the bed and dropped on the sofa in front of the huge TV. It's decadent, it's a deserved treat, and every traveller should take time to look for a treat like this to de-gunge and unwind. As a one off, this is worth every penny and puts every hotel I've ever been able to afford to visit in Europe or North America to shame.
