101 has all sorts of connotations, not least the Orwellian regime just across the Taiwan Straits from Taiwan. In that context, the tallest building in the World, Taipei's 101 storey megalith is a stunning icon for the modern age and a more progressive age. In an earthquake zone, it is an adventurous piece of engineering based upon it's huge mega columns. The amazing thing is that it's so big, yet from much of central Taipei you don't get a good enough view of it to appreciate it's scale. When you're stood at the bottom, you have to either lie down on the floor or dislocate your neck to see the top. It's impressive and a trip in the high speed lift to the top is well worthwhile. It carries a health warning though: vertigo and people with sensitive ears would do well to consider it carefully, but still do it - it's great!
