The observation deck at Singapore airport is the first taste of it. That dusty smell and taste of heat and humidity which almost chokes you at your first breath outdoors in the tropics. The air is heavier so you can almost feel it weighing in your lungs, but the second, third and fourth breaths come easier and I can savour each one.

There's something about this sensation that sets my heart beating with the excitement of expectation. This is how my jet-lagged mind first knows that I've arrived somewhere different, whether I'm on holiday, getting ready to work, or just passing through now. Soon there will be another flight, but the holiday has already begun with these first few lungfuls of sticky, warm air.

Now that I'm really on holiday, it's time to sit on the observation deck surrounded by brilliant yellow sunflowers and watch the life of the airport's runways whilst enjoying the warmth of the near-equatorial sunshine. London is a long way away, China is a long way away. All that I'm thinking about is enjoying the warmth and that sweet taste.
