A year away, 5 days back in the office getting myself put back on the payroll (important), getting email (useful), getting an id card (helpful), and reading numerous management and administrative documentation (yawn), and it's time for a holiday. Even though it works in my favour, I'm stunned that some idiots in the European Commission, a few British mandarins negotiating an opt-out clause managed to draft a piece of legislation which resulted in my employer being legally obligated to provide me with statutory holiday accrued whilst I was on sabbatical leave and not working for my company. Perhaps I do the politicians a disservice and they're being used as an excuse by somebody in HR for their mistake, but right now there's no point selling me to a client on 1 October and then announcing that I've got 22 days holiday to take before 31 December, so holiday it is.

It sounds great doesn't it? A year away, one week of admin in the office, and then 3 weeks holiday to take. Thing is, you'd never normally take 3 weeks holiday at 24 hours notice. Weekends are fine, but come Monday everyone else is busily getting on with their lives, and I don't have one back in the UK as yet. I'm glad to be back, it's great to walk outside for hours in a comfortable, albeit chilly climate, and to have the feeling of being able to do nothing. Sometimes you need to savour that feeling of doing nothing after months of hard graft at work. Right now, I'm very relaxed and with the nothing staring at me for the next three weeks, it's taken only 24 hours for me to get twitchy and to crave to do something.

To begin with surfing the web is a way to spend an hour or two, but soon the travel sites catch my eye and set me thinking. A quick look at a guide book or two and I'm planning a trip. After all, this month's salary is going to be tax-free too! Where to?
