Where I stayed
The seven intrepid explorers once again set off after an early morning start from Leeds Bradford Airport desination Rome.
David, Elaine, Maria, Linda, Kath, Robin & Donna again look forward to the next chapter in exploring European cities.
After the last two visits of Venice and Nice where as always mishaps happen, will this year be finally a calm peaceful break ?
After landing at Rome airport, Fiumicino, we take the transfer to our Hotel, Hotel Genio. A quick drop off of our baggage and straight out to see the sights, maybe the Trevi Fountain, an ice cream shop, a quick pint, the Pantheon, maybe walk past the Forum and visit the Colosseum, not forgetting the Crypt of the Capuchin monks with all their skulls and bones decorating the walls
An evening meal out near the Piazza Navona (no more Lemoncello this year !) we finally retire back in the early hours to our Hotel
An early morning start with everyone appearing on time, a slight problem in the last half a mile getting to the airport as the road was closed !!!! So after a detour around the countryside we finally arrived at the airport.
No bags to check in so straight into security. Now Linda why are you the only one that needed a full search, what are you trying to smuggle out of the country !!! I am sure you were glad that they did not quite go as far as the plastic gloves !!!
David and Kath straight to the bar despite Leeds Bradford airport having a major revamp and trying to get them lost, but they found the bar and the now regular double vodka's appearing !
Well we are now sitting on the plane and "Houston we have a problem !!!"
Apparently we have a fuel mismatch on the paperwork our fuel per the gauge does not match the paperwork !!! Well let's see what happens - is this another Nice experience as per last year !
Why do our trips always have some problem - I blame Kath !!!
After a 40 minute delay we were off and 3 hours later after numerous glasses of rosé wine we are now being transferred by private taxi to Rome centre. It's hot sunny and we all need to strip off !
Arrived at hotel and booked in, now lets find Rome !
A quick five minute walk round the corner saw us arrive at Piazza Navona where we all sat in the baking hot sun in a street cafe having ice cream sundae's (and a couple of beers for David and me)
After relaxing for an hour in the sun we visited nearby the Pantheon. An amazing building built in 27bc with the ceiling 43.3 metres above. Quite amazing, even if there is still a hole in the roof !!
Winding our way through the twisting streets with high buildings with small shops and street stalls selling a wide range of items we arrived firstly at the Tempo Adriano and finally arriving at the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi fountain !!)
Rome is very busy at the moment with huge numbers of tourists , no doubt brought out by the hot sunny days
Next on the list of Roman buildings is the museum and crypts of the capuchin monks. The "highlight" being a series of 7 rooms or crypts that are decorated in human bones. From the pelvis room to the skull room to chandeliers all made from bones under subdued light it was certainly an experience !!
6.30pm saw a welcome rest for the weary feet as we arrived back at the hotel for a quiet lay down and recuperate.
Tonight will see us visit a small family run restaurant called Antica Taverna which is situated half way between the piazza Navona and the Castel Sant'Angelo, far enough away from the tourist restaurants !!!
Our meal was tucked away in the quiet part of Rome a typical taverna where all the locals eat. Our table was outside and as we arrived at 8pm the place was buzzing. We were greeted with a glass of bubbly each while our table was prepared.
Our hosts suggested a mixed starter of Italian antipasti and we all opted for that. Plate upon plate of salami's cooked meats, fish dishes, veg dishes etc. Linda and Kath both trying new dishes such as moules (mussels) and Calamari.
With individual main courses mainly variant types of pasta we were all full (maybe also the multiple bottles of wine also attributed !!)
We must apologise to the locals as we were quite vocal with lots of laughter, occasionally warding off street vendors who were selling items ranging from the typical red roses for E1 to dancing cats and frightening luminous balls which Kath was frightened by !
During our meal 1 euro Elaine was managing the brothel door !!! I better explain - next to our table and right beside Elaine's seat was a black door. This door seemed to be frequently visited all night by various people, Elaine having to slightly move out of the way each time !! Like most of Europe you have to pay 1 Euro even for a visit to the loo, we decided Elaine would do quite well for charging all night access !
Desert saw David finally get his creme brûlée after waiting for three trips since our first trip to Venice !!! He had been waiting for this every trip.
Finally after a final drink of grappa (wow that was strong, (Elaine chickened out !) we staggered back to the hotel for a good nights sleep !
