Travel by minivan from Ubud to the port of Padang Bai (approx 1 hr).
Take a ferry from Bali to Lombok (approx 4-7 hrs). The ferry is a huge multi-level boat busy with food hawkers offering interesting snacks, as well as plenty of local passengers to meet.
Although the journey is long, this ferry ride and the arrival into Lembar port can be quite an eye opener as both the scenery and culture of Lombok are very different to that of Bali.
Take a short ride by 'bemo' (minibus) to Tetebatu (approx 2 hrs)
The hill retreat of Tetebatu, situated in the centre of Lombok at the southern base of Mt Rinjani, provides spectacular views.
Well I managed half an hour in an Internet cafe last night and managed to load up photo's for day 1 and 2 - at least you have some to look at !
Off we go again day one of the second tour and an early start, alarm rings at 6am and breakfast at 7 after packing ! Donnas banana pancake must be mentioned !!! Have a look at the picture it was green !!!
Then after around an hour of fairly light traffic with the new "team" and as It being a Sunday more children marching we finally arrived at the port, it is very strange to see the apparent confusion of both loading and unloading taking place at once ! On board a basic two level ship of which we had access to all areas (but no where to go) the hawkers decended I did not realise that my sunglasses needed replacing
Then in what I can describe as a floating tin can in which we as heinz baked beans we were slowly cooked for 4 hours in which the passenger areas resembled sweaty hold wjth seats with people sitting all over the floor we spent a pleasant 4 hours (not !!!) the film was great - a Chinese spoken (with Balanese subtitles) boxing film with an extremely bad English actor !!!
All areas being steerage class !
We are real backpackers now as we have a 2 hour minibus ride, now all of us packed into one bus with all our rucksacks strapped to the roof ! The style of the villages has changed as we have left Hindu and buddist with loads of temples and in Lombok is Muslim and its also Ramadan and they are all fasting during daylight. We stopped at a Market and tried some buffalo skin crackers... Yummy was the consensus !!! (thanks Chris - really enjoyed those !!!)
We have now been travelling all day and the sun has just set - I have never seen so many people at the side of the road eat at the same time. "are we nearly there yet !" it's been 10 hours since we set off !
Well we have arrived and yuk !!! Come on intrepid two nights in this hovel is not good, a very basic room without even a fan, pealing Walls, a bed and a 1920's chest of draws. The bathroom, mmmm a shower head attached to the wall over the loo with a small sink attached to bedroom wall
Quote from Donna "there is basic and scraping the barrel and we are in the barrel !"
The restaurant is no better what looks like a sports hall with a table tennis table and a table with benches. (at least Helen was happy playing table tennis)
Omg the mosque has just started wailing !!! That's going to be good at 5.30 in the morning !
Let's hope tomorrow and the itinerary makes up for it !
