Tour Guide

Rising early, reach the summit of Mt Batur in time to witness a stunning sunrise over the valleys of Bali. The walk takes 1.5-2 hours up, and yes, it's UP!

On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt Rinjani.

For the adventurous it may be possible to walk the narrow paths right around the volcano rim (max. 1 hour). After descending the volcano, there's an option to soak in hot springs with great views over the lake and caldera.

Make the journey from the mountains to the small coastal town of Lovina (approx 4 hrs).

My Blog

Well after our very quick stay in bed we arose at 2am (yes 2 !!!) and set off walking up and up and up. By 5.30 we had walked up 1700 metres of volcano at an average gradient of 25% !!! in the pitch black it was fun, finally as you all in UK were sitting down after tea to watch eastenders we watched the sun rise over the horizon and then a few of us set up to the top of the volcano a further 25 mins uphill. It was not easy walking on 1:1 slope made up of volcanic ash but we were rewarded with breakfast (which we had carried up) of two stale slices of bread, a boiled egg, a small sweet banana and some jam ! Fun with the jam with no knife.

By the time we had climbed down it was 9am and we all felt that we had been up all day. Back in our minivan and by 10 am we were lounging in a swimming pool in a thermal pool - wow !!! (or the 150,000 per person swimming pool as Chris referred to it as) so it's now midday and off to lovinia !!! An endless day !

After a quick walk around town (and a banana split) we are determined to stay awake until bed time, we met all the others at 7pm and our guide had booked us into a posh restaurant - we rebelled !!! He is new to this job only his second trip and he seems to think we want posh, but posh comes at a price, so tonight we all said no and went to another restaurant, as it happened it was a third of the price, live music on the background and the food was fab, if a little slow(not that we minded that much!) I had black rice pudding !!! Mmmm ! He will learn that westerners are not bottomless pits of cash !

It's now 10.40 pm and as we have been up for over 20 hours we are dead...

Before I go to bed however the loo does not flush, the bathroom cold tap (don't have a hot one) is wobbly and there is a giant hornet in the room !!! Maybe you can see our luxury hotel is not quite what they were at the beginning of the week !

Typical menu's of the holiday with prices :-

Nasi goreng, mie goreng(noodles), gado gado (veg dish) ayem sate (chicken skewers) all menu dishes around 30,000 to 50,000 rp

Drinks large bingtang (beer) 30,000 small bingtan 25,000 large water 10,000 fanta ( strawberry and orange) 10,000 fresh fruit juices (made with fresh fruit and lots of ice) 15,000

There are 14300 rp per £. So a typical meal of main course and large beer is 70,000 (£4.79)

Omg just read tomorrows itinerary we have to meet at 6am to go dolphin watching - I better go to sleep !

mum and dad on

your trip sounds fun. Your hotel sounds like standard Asian!!!! Hope you remembered to take moth balls. You are missing some exciting olympics but I expect you would prefer to be where you are.
