Pre Blog

Today is all about Belfast, use the hop on, hop off bus to explore Belfast, Shanklin Road, Stormont and the famous Titanic experience

Live Blog

Well the cycle ride yesterday must have tired them all out, it's 9.30 am and everyone is still in bed !!

10.30 and we are off, a quick walk into town and it's manic, apparently the Queen is doing a walk about in around two hours !!!! Wow !!!

We all popped into Carrolls an Irish tourist gift shop immediately Matthew had a problem , he touched a giant teddy dressed as an Irish leprechaun and then could not get it to sit up again !! Is he always like this ?

Major news headlines !!!

It's official we are now a family and we have 14 year old twins...!!!!

We have purchased tickets for the Belfast hop on hop off bus and the guide asked us the ages of our children ! We said 18 - he replied no they are 14 I will sell you a family ticket, so we now have 14 year old twins - omg teenage years all over again !!

First stop on our tour titanic museum, an interactive push button type place with yorvik type rides and all surround cinemas.

Even Donna who does not do museums said it was great. We spent a good couple of hours here.

After a bite to eat in the Titanic cafe we ran like mad to catch the your bus and then proceeded our way round all the sites of Belfast :-

Crumlin road jail, Shanklin road, the Falls area, past the Sinn Fein centre.

It's an amazing relatively short history that seems so recent. With hotels being made famous for being the most bombed in Europe to the high steel walls dividing the city between Protestant and Catholic to more recent history between huge debates between the royalists and nationalists with the opposing views it's quite an eye opener. I must admit I have never done quite a different city tour as this.

Belfast in the centre is vibrant with a large cultural and dining out scene and a massive shopping area such a world away from the outside world view.

Just found out the reason for the large car park next to our apartment, apparently where we are staying was the most bombed area of Belfast and to stop them blowing more buildings up they knocked them down and built car parks... Great to know I look after my family well. !!!

A very interesting day, now where shall we eat tonight ?

Ended the night with bounty cheesecake at a fantastic Italian restaurant.

Quote of the day from Matthew:-

"Did you know the hotel Europa just round the corner from where we are staying, there were 79 bombs and 28 went off... Perfectly safe mum !!"
