Where I stayed
Il Quartuccio B&B Gaeta
This morning after breakfast sees us travel 2 hours north to cut the gap down to the airport the following day. We arrive at a small fishing village half way between Naples and Rome called Gaeta
Tonight sees a different type of accomodation a small bed and breakfast tucked away in the back streets of the village called II Quartuccio B&B. Luigi the owner has already been in contact wishing us a happy stay !
Hopefully a great end to what should if the weather is kind to us an amazing relaxing holiday
Yet another sunny morning, we feel we have been extremely lucky with the weather, all the locals we speak to say its unusual
But back to today we yet again sat eating breakfast on the veranda (well apart from the five minutes I smuggled out lunch)
Departing at 10.30 we drove for nearly three hours along the coast road from Sorrento to Naples and then made our way north along the coast road to a small village called Gaeta
With its old town cobbled alleyways and a beautiful beach, once again a delight to finish off the holiday.
We booked ourself into our B&B and went to sit on the rooftop patio and ate our smuggled lunch of rustic bread, ham and cheese.
10 minutes later we sat at a small cafe on the beach and soaked up the rays of the sun for the next couple of hours whilst digging our toes in the white sand.
Well what an amazing holiday with some of the best food we have tasted for years, we were high on expectations for tonight
It was Halloween and as soon as we were out of the hotel we came across children running in all directions in costume. We walked slowly along the front to the old town (as directed by our host) it was a long walk around 25 minutes. On arrival we found a couple of barely opened restaurants but most of them closed.. The couple that we had been recommended were fish only , so these were a no-no
So a 25 minute walk back to the main town !!!
We picked restaurant #2 on trip advisor, some good reviews, but we had the worse meal I have ever had anywhere !!!!
Dried yesterday's bread first appeared, no oils or vinegar's that we have had every night, starters were ok. Helen's pizza came (wrong one than ordered) and was oily and bland. Donnas spaghetti with tomatoes was just that, some spaghetti and tinned tomatoes and I went for one of the two meat dishes which translated as Sausage meat balls. Well see the picture to see what appeared. They were tough as old rope and I did not eat them.
On trip advisor a family said they travelled 200 miles and stayed overnight in a hotel just to eat at this restaurant. They truly must eat some terrible food at home !
We paid and left ! What a really disappointment to the end of a fantastic gourmet week.
Hungry I raided an ice cream shop for a final ice cream on the way back to an early bed - thankfully we had a half finished bottle of sparkling wine back at our hotel.
