Pre blog

our final day in Shanghai we explore the final areas of town from the Yuyuan Gardens and finally board our longest overnight train journey which travels 1620 km (1006 miles !!!) which takes 22 hours !! Thats a long sleep !

Maybe we can practice our Manderin on the locals...

Live blog

Early morning rise and across town on subway 11 (2 stops - mind your head !!) and then subway 2 (4 stops) to arrive at the base of the Pearl Tower.

120 rmb lighter each and we were in a glass lift shooting towards the 264th floor. Amazing sights across Shanghai - what gets me is the number of housing skyscrapers there are as far as the eye can see in every direction ( see the picture entitled 'the bund' as an example.

After 1/2 hour admiring all the views (totally enclosed glass walls and solid floor) we descended one floor and were surprised to see another viewing platform, this time with a glass floor. We all gingerly (apart from Donna) stepped out. With heart rates higher and bodies saying no we took some photo's and stepped back into safety !!! This viewing platform was open to the elements !!!!

Back to the hostel (purchased a towel for a shower in the hostels communal showers ;) and a quick bite to eat and back in a taxi towards the train station, suddenly half way down the motorway another car made contact with ours (don't worry the motorway was packed and we were only going 20kph). We both stopped in the fast lane and our taxi driver got out. 20 minutes later and 1 police motorcyclist we set off, only to the next pull off. Where did we stop - safely on the hard shoulder - no - just in front of the concrete divider to the slip road - with cars now passing both sides at 50mph the policeman, our taxi and the third party went way to have an argument !!

Another 10 minutes later and the taxi driver then took us to the train station (with the third party following )- no doubt they are still arguing now

As he did not stop the meter I had calculated the correct fare and paid as such - he argued - I won as he had to go and sort out his car with the other driver !!

Robert was relieved !!

We are now aboard the 3rd train - the last two were third class - we are now in second class - we have our own light switch and electric socket. (Both to share between 6 people). Everything else appears the same.

The Strides are sharing our 6 birth with Mark and Evelyn. The 6th person a young lady is sleeping in between me and Mark (on the middle bunk !!). Poor thing !

p.s. electric socket does not work !!

It sounds as though you were safer on your bikes! The views from the tower are fantastic. It is a very different Shanghai to the one we saw.Even the trains look more streamlined and no BUGS in sight!
The plums are still not ripe.
