Where I stayed
kings joy hotel
Today sees us transfer the 1/2 kilometre down the main street to our second hotel where at 6pm that evening we meet our group.
Our hotel the King's Joy hotel although only a three star looks clean and tidy, with individual rooms.
So another day to explore Beijing, maybe the Forbidden City or Tiananmen Square (watch out for tanks !)o
We awoke to glorious sunshine - breakfast was weird - steamed dumplings locally known as dim sum - how can you eat something that is looking at you (see photo !)
Outside the breakfast room the minor bird repeats "ni hao' (hello) continuously
Internet connection in china is strange - very restricted - most pages I try are restricted including Facebook and my own work website !!!
We transferred to our new hotel where they tried to get Helen and Donna to sleep in the same room with me sharing a room with another man..... Then they put me and Donna together with Helen sharing the room with a man - third attempt is together with Helen sharing a room with another woman. So sorted. A basic 3 star room - clean and tidy - not bad
Drop off the bags and out we go
Tiananmen Square - no tanks today - but my god it's hot !!! Its midday and too hot - it's nearly 40 degrees so before Helen fell over with heat exhaustion we went for lunch at McDonalds - air con and huge cold drinks - bliss !!! (And free wifi)
As the midday sun gets hotter we find a brand new shopping street, they must have bulldozed acres of land. It looks like Disneyland Main Street with old fashioned trams running up and down. Half the shops are still empty. We found a Chinese tea shop. Donna drank jasmine tea in a beautiful tea cup with lid, Helen refused a drink but I tried a tea milk shake ...
At 6pm we met our group leader Robert and the rest of the gang, 7 of us all together plus Robert
We all went across the road to a restaurant to have our group meeting and afterwards a large assortment of Chinese dishes followed by the famous Peking duck and pancakes !!!
Just don't look in the kitchen as we passed upstairs - food hygiene rating - 5 on a scale of 1 to 10
Anyway we seemed to survive to live another day !!
So far the food has been normal - no dog, snake or other unexplained or uneatable food. Diary note - must try harder to get unexplained unknown food !
Prices are not unreasonable - McDonald's around half price of the UK and tonight's meal of as much as we could eat was 60 yen (£6) with a bottle of beer 12 yen (£1.20)
Our group consists of Tara, Mark and Evelyn from the UK and Nathan from Perth Australia.
Have we confident in our guides ability when walking back to the hotel he walked straight past - we had to shout to him to tell him to stop !!
Anyway are now sitting in the rooftop bar having a beer... It's 9pm and we are looking over the rooftops and watching the twinkling lights of the government buildings around Tiananmem square. As Nathan said "Beijing looks so clean and tidy at this time of night up here on the ninth floor with hardly any lights on !!"
