Recommended by my trusty Lonely Planet guide I headed out to ritzy La Lucciola, on what turned out to be Valentine's Day. It's the next best restaurant in Seminyak after numero uno Ku De Ta. The day had been building up to a storm and by the time I went out it was a full blown rattler. A gorgeous Italian place, the restaurant is a two-storey bamboo structure by the sea. I asked for a table for one and received a pitiful but kind look from the waiter. The tables were full of romantic couples and the lighting hard to read by - obviously meant for younger eyes than mine! The rain started in earnest and I had the profound experience of being rained on eating my veal ragout. I had to move twice and then ended up at the bar with no one else around. When it was time to go home, I had to walk through calf high water to get to a taxi. By this time it was only about 8 pm. I passed by some bars in a taxi but no one was venturing out, so I made my way home to watch a DVD. Next time I'll take galoshes.
