Twenty-five years ago on my first visit to Bali (and first visit anywhere), I stepped off the plane into a tropical paradise heavy with the scent of unknown experiences. Motorbike riders didn't wear helmets and there were hundreds of people on the streets. The young riders of today are more safety conscious but there are still no road rules, and everyone's still called Ketut or Made. The Balinese people have stayed the same age; it's only I who have aged...
Instead of a hotel, I'm renting a luxury private villa, one of thousands which have recently sprung up all around Bali. Villa Sari is a mix of modern, minimalist design with a dash of lime to match the palms, and mauve to match the overcast sky of the low season. It's luxury living with a private pool, two bedrooms and bathrooms and wi-fi Internet access.
My first day got me used to having tens of thousands of rupiah in my purse at the beginning of the day and none at the end. $5 massages still abound but it is a quieter place I find on my visit as a mature traveller.

DELUXE!
So - you are now ensconced in luxury, in paradise! While I sit here at my WORK desk typing this wishing I had the guts to drop it all and join you for a weekend... From just the first photo you are already refreshed and loving it.
I'm now going to armchair travel throught the next parts of this blog and all the ones to come. Funny thing, though - my eyes seem to have turned a vivid shade of green ;-) Love you, gb
