It was pretty quiet while i was there but nice to chill out a bit and have some time to myself. I met up with a young canadian couple and went on a tour of town and out towards the more traditional garifuna settlements then on to a ´waterfall´ with little water running. It was already the dry season, but according to our guide the government has further reduced flow to deprive the indigenous population (probably Mayans further upstream) of water. This sounds fairly typical from what i´ve heard of the Guatemalan government
I tried a Garifuna dish called tapado - a whole fish, a whole crab, prawns, bananas and some other vegetables in coconut milk soup, and was very tasty. It was the first seafood i´d had in a long time as it was very dodgy in mainland guatemala and i had been avoiding it. I figured livingston was right on the water, and i could see the fishing boats coming and going from where i was eating so it must be ok. Turned out i was wrong- maybe having the fish sitting in a bucket out the back wasn´t the best place to store them. Got pretty sick that night and spent most of the next day in bed in crazy heat.
Was all good though and i left for Honduras the next day. I will definitely miss Guatemala, and take lots of good memories with me! I´ll be coming back one day soon i hope.
