So after going to bed to the rain coming down on the shelter roof, it was very lovely to wake up at dawn to some blue skies. 2000 miles and still the weather determines so much about our moods. The first few miles were beautiful, smooth and slightly downhill trail. Unfortunately the deer flies are particularly bad today so I end up wearing the headnet all day. The buzz of deer flies orbiting my head is always annoying but at least they can't bite my scalp or buzz
into my hair...
The trail gets a little more annoying as the day progresses, but I guess I've come to expect that from these northern trails! Several slips and falls have me angry at the trail again. Out here it seems that emotion is never far off, something that is not a part of my off- trail personality
Stopped at a neat shelter for lunch with the best spring on the trail. It was a beautiful big pool with clear cold water and the bottom covered with little silver and gold flecks. I still treated anyway though, mostly because I love the taste of iodine so much. Great view of Katahdin a mile later from across a lake, with it's head high in the clouds! From time to time Baxter peak, the end of the trail, is visible. Hard to imagine that I should be up there in a few days!
Afternoon was a trudge because my feet got so worn out walking on the roots and rocks. However I'm very excited because tomorrow is my last full day of hiking!
Lovely evening and arrived fairly early at the shelter. Had a nice chat with Mike from Grand Rapids, MI and Chris from Penn State. I'm looking forward to getting out of the wilderness... These people are just getting into it!
I hope that each of you has learned something new about me and the Appalachian Mountains. I'm thinking about trying to come up with a nice way of presenting this trip
I was thinking today how wonderful it is going to be on vacation...sit in a chair and eat, watch movies, read a book, go to the beach, play games, maybe watch rain come down from inside!!
Sun is setting so it's time to call it a night. It's been so fun having you all along, even if you didn't comment and have just been reading stealthily... I feel your good vibes :)
