Just accidentally sent off the last email. I'll blame it on my hands being cold.
Woke up and got to chat with Whoopie Pie who is SOBO. I asked her for the scoop on the whites etc. I hit the trail at 7 which was respectable but it was to be a long day.
First mtn is Mt Cube, a 1500 ft climb. Great views along the way until passing above cloud line. The climb goes really easily which is always a pleasant feeling. The rest of the morning flies by and I even get lucky enough to sit out the first rainstorm in my mornin break shelter.
In the afternoon right before lunch I cross NH 25 and then there is a river with no bridge! Fording time! So my first ford is pretty easy but it takes extra time to switch shoes and the water is COLD
After lunch is Mt Moosilauke, a 4800 ft mtn and the first one above treeline. The climb is about 3000 ft and halfway up the wind and rain starts and I meet people looking at me with pity on their way down. Stories of 50 mph winds and sleet get me a little excited.
It wasn't actually cold enough up top to be sleeting but it was in the low 50s and at the summit in the rocks I was literally being blown off the trail. All this talk of hurricanes down south but no one mentions that up on Mt Moosilauke it's doing 50 mph winds. Crazy first treeline experience but I guess it's ok. No views at the top except fog and cloud. I wasn't planning on any views in the Whites at all though, so no problemo.
Now I'm at the shelter tryin to keep warm in my sleeping bag. It's gonna be a cold night sleeping just down here back into the trees. Coldest since VA I think.
That's all for today, my fingers can't type anymore.
