Hi y'all!
Feeling like a slacker right now cause I should really still be hiking...the next shelter was only an easy 6 more miles... Ah well I guess 23 mi will have to suffice.

Parts of today were absolutely lovely, just great walking through the forest, not too many rocks, and lots of time to get lost in my own thoughts. Perhaps this is what a thruhike should really be about.

Of course we woke up to moderate rain, which has become a daily experience. However by lunchtime the sun was beginning to peek out which really lifts everyones spirits (until the next big hill when you are sweating like crazy!)  Passed a group hiking and one of the leaders saw me and asked, "what part of Philadelphia are you from?" I responded, a little oddly, with "I'm not, I'm from Michigan!!" I don't know why anyone would think by looking at me that I'd be a Philadelphian...but I spent the next half hour while hiking trying to analyze my clothes and appearance looking for a clue.

At Caledonia State Park we thought we could get some hot food from a snack bar, but it was closed... Despite what this guy on the trail had said. (and because of his info I didn't walk the 0.3 down the road to a pizzeria...) missing out on roadside meals is just very sad. As Slapshot put it, it's like anti- trail magic.

Passed by the first shelter I've seen with a designated "caretaker" meaning someone hikes up to it all the time and keeps it looking amazing. There were even some potted flowers. I've heard there are many more shelters like this further north.  This shelter tonight is also super, it has built in bunks and a huge front covered area with a picnic table. So... When it's raining in the morning ( as I'm sure it will be) there is nice room to cook breakfast.

I've been trying to catch up with Willard, the guy I hiked with in the Smokies, and I am now within a day, but it is so hard to catch people out here. He's been 1-2 days ahead since Gatlinburg. (that's 800 mi for those playing at home)

Looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend, there should be lots of people out on the trail and maybe good chance for trail magic if the weather is decent. Hopefully I'll have some hiking partners too.

On a last sad note, all is not well in my off-trail life. It appears my email account that I've had for nearly 15 years has been hacked. I apologize for any spam you may have recieved and I cannot currently access the account so if you've sent me mail, I'll hopefully get it someday. Perhaps when I wind up in a place with solid Internet access, I'll be able to figure things out.
Hope that everything is well with you... Felt good to be on the trail today even if my feet hurt and I'm all tuckered out.
