In the shelter tonight with a few others. Hoping the bugs stay down.  We tried a new remedy thanks to the advice of a section hiker, Rockstar. Sassafrass leaves crushed up and rubbed on the skin. It actually seems to help quite a lot. Probably healthier than DEET, right?

Woke up nice and early and ate myself silly at the continental breakfast. Hit the trail by 9 and the weather was just beautiful! Breezy, sunny, and about 80. The canopy is filled in at this lower altitude so finally we have some shade. That makes such a difference! I don't have to wear my big floppy hat as much.

I was the first out on the trail this morning. You might wonder, "how do you know you are first?" well because I was clearing cobwebs. What a pain to get spiders in your face about every 20 ft.

So today we hit 1/3 mark of the trail!!! Big milestone, smaller milestone was we passed halfway of Virginia. Starting to feel like we are gathering momentum towards the north.

The new shoes held up pretty well, though today was pretty easy and level and I only did 18. Well see how they feel when I'm on rocks and big hills. The cool thing is that they keep my feet so much cooler and due to that, drier. Also they weigh so much less, I think it must make a real difference.

Feels good to be back in nature after living in the city for 2 days. I feel refreshed.  Today we also walked along the Blue Ridge Parkway which well be crisscrossing for the next 90mi.  Weird to see cars looking at the viewpoints and whatnot.

Ok bed time, I'm gonna crawl into my sleeping bag and wish it was my 40 degree summer bag. I'll be switching out very soon :) also excited to get the new tent.
Hope all is well. Any cool questions for me yet?? Come on don't be shy!

Aunt Carol on

Hey Rob. Grandma, Aunt Ruth, & I are still enjoying every mile of your trek--albeit in cozier conditions! Question: did you prepare mail packages in advance for your folks to send, or do you ask them to send things as needed? Wondering about the switching of sleeping bags.? Watch where you place your feet and enjoy!
