Writing from my campsite here on top of the sugar run mtn which you may have a hard time finding on the shelter map since it's not a shelter! Speaking of which, the really attentive ( or obsessed) out there may have noticed that on the main page of this AT journal there is now a website that shows all of the AT shelters. Follow the link and then activate the shelters function. You should be able to keep track of me better that way!!  Also to test it out, here is the link: /k.9733/Interactive_Map.htm

So tonight I'm camped out since I was hiking and realized I wasn't going to make it before dark.  I'm camped out all by myself, which believe it or not is a first. Yes, I'll admit it's a little spooky sitting out here in the woods all by myself. Hopefully my tired legs will overrule the crazy thoughts of the mind and I'll get some good sleep. I built a little fire to keep me company but I'll have to put it out soon because it is dry. Not the kind of night to leave a fire burning (there never really is though!)

Hiked only in the high teens today, the terrain was actually very easy, just didn't have any Umph in my step. Midway through the morning there was a road crossing with a gas station 0.5 mi down the road. So I and a few others stashed our packs and walked there. Ended up spending 10$ on a hamburger, fries, sodas, and chips. Not at all healthy, but it's so hard to resist. After getting back on the trail there was another detour, this time to a waterfall. Beautiful spot and some people even jumped off the falls into the river below. I wasn't hot enough to do that... But when the summer rolls around...

The terrain was totally flat for the next 6 mi but my feet got really tired. Ended up being a trudge. I think I'm getting the "Virginia blues" it's a very long state and gets a bit dull at times.  Not all bad though. Today I passed the 600 mi mark! Also walked over a suspension bridge dedicated solely to the AT. Very nice walking along the rivers and a couple old apple orchards.  I have to remember that a lot of the places the trail goes past were once farms and homesteads. What an amazing feat that an organization strung all this together!

Planning to get up at 5:30 tomorrow to head into town. Pearisburg, VA is the next stop. I'm thinking I'll get myself a hotel room (or split one if people are down) and spend the afternoon eating, resupplying, relaxing, and fixing my boots too. Oh and perhaps I'll shower. It's been a week since my last cleanup in Damascus. Yep, gross I know, but actually I don't even notice the smell anymore.

There's a trail bug going around right now and everyone around has been sick. Really hoping to avoid that one! It's bad enough to be sick at home where you can eat chicken noodle soup, throw up in a toilet and drink as many fluids as necessary without waiting 20 min for the iodine to work! Using my handsanitizer but hoping that being alone a lot does the trick too.

Hope you are all well. Let me know if you are interested in hiking memorial day weekend (or maybe you have something else in mind?)

Hi Rob,
I'm interested in hiking Memorial Day weekend... I will keep it open. Unfortunately Josh doesn't get a long weekend but maybe I could join you for a Saturday/overnight/Sunday? I'll keep it open... let me know as it gets closer what you're thinking!!!! I'm starting to run a bit so hopefully I won't be TOO slow but you'll definitely have to go easy on me :-)
