LNT stands for leave no trace, it's a policy of outdoor ethics, basically saying pack in everything and then pack it out. It should look like you've never camped in an area. Unfortunately not everyone follows these policies. I've seen a lot of plastic wrappers, glass bottles, grafitti, and other junk out here. Please practice these guidelines the next time you're in the woods!!
Today was a great day! As we approached I-26 I had cell phone service, which was nice. Got the weather report and it was encouraging. But we hike rain or shine so no point in getting too worked up. After the big miles yesterday I was a bit apprehensive about today but everything loosened up right away. I'm getting new blisters on the bottom of my feet now, but I think that those'll eventually just turn to callouses
Did a lot of lollygaggin' today. Spent nearly 2 hours at Hogs Back shelter for lunch ( which included a ginormous hike down for water.) Also a guy and his two kids ( prolly about 4 or 5) hiked up and had a box of cookies for trail magic! We also met" trail blazer" there who was on his way south to complete his thru.
After that we got down to sams gap and I-26. There was a trash can there and we were joking around about magic being left in it. So, I actually started digging through the garbage can and we found a jar of honey. Roughin it now has that with him. While we were doing this, some trail maintainers drove up in their truck and offered us a ride down to a convenience store. We all piled in and went to a gas station about 3 miles down. I bought and ate 1000 calories. Under 3 bucks: root beer, ice cream sandwich, and honey bun.
Thanks to coach and Sherpa for the lift... Also the trail in that section looked great!
The last 3 were easy and we took our time. Passed a lot of day hikers (apparently today's Sunday) including some yappie little dogs, and overweight people
miles to go!!")
We are camped out in the woods tonight, unfortunately the road noise from the hwy is quite loud. Had a great campfire and now we are cowboy camping for the night. Sherlock caught up, and it seems like not that many people in general are ahead of us, or at least they don't sign many shelter logs. Looking up at the stars and can't think of anything I'd rather be doing right now. All the build up, the hype, the legend of the AT...it's everything it's cracked up to be.
Hope you are doing well. I have a request for the backpackers/ travelers out there that also wear contact lenses. I'm looking for a contact case that doesn't spill liquid even under changes of pressure and being tossed around. I've tried two now and they both leak. Very annoying. Let me know if you have an opinion!
