Funfact: The AT is about 2180 miles long but yesterday Roughin It pointed out that as the crow flies, Springer Mtn is only 1300 mi from Katahdin. (the northern terminus) So Aikido Jo immediately says "well I guess I'll start bushwhacking then!"
This morning we woke to cold, condensation frozen on tents, etc. I cant believe my stove ( and whatever is left of my fuel) managed to boil water for oatmeal! After a hearty breakfast we get a bit of a late start.. Nice views along the ridgelines, finally able to see the Smokies that loom ahead! Looks like snow is still up there but hoping the trail is passable.
Lunch is at Wesser Bald, which had a nice look out tower with great 360 views
I grab the cheapest meal at the "general store" ( a gas station would have been better) and check in the outfitter to see if they know anything about the Smokies. They don't, just more rumors. And rumors that try to sell their ridiculously priced Yak Traks and crampons.
We all meet up for dinner, what had become a really friendly group of hikers. I eat a ton and order a bowl of chili for dessert, and end up getting the trail name "Donner" because the one guy I'm sharing a room with thinks I'm going to go cannabalistic... Haha anyways it's better than gangrene.
Speaking of which the feet seem to be improving, but I won't be safe until the wound are all scabbed over. My ankles really hurt though...someone described shin splints to me, and it sounds like both that and tendinitis at the same time. Haven't taken any "vitamin I" yet (Ibuprofen) and don't plan on it unless things get really bad,
Staying in a bunkhouse tonight with a guy that notoriously snores (Longhaul) and he was nice enough to pass out ear plugs
Got a shower, and plan to hike out in the AM, despite forecast of bad weather...got a long ways to go. Lots of other hikers are taking a zero, but I am planning two of those in Gatlinburg, so I don't feel I should indulge yet.
Hope everything is well where you are reading. Great to get all the feedback, sorry I can't reply to them all. If you want a specific question addressed then you are best to email me or text.
