So not everyday on the trail can be a good one. The first couple of hours went ok but then mom started having problems. Her hip really hurt as did her stomach. We weren't going to make it so I carried her pack to the next gap. There she connected with a lady that was getting a shuttle out. My mom went for that. I was kinda bummed, I really thought she would make it.

So I'm alone now, which means some of her fans will stop following, but I'll press on as much as I can. The rest of the day starting at about 4:15 was spent hiking like a maniac to cross 3 mtns. I paid the price.  I arrived at the shelter, lost my appetite then lost my stomach contents behind the shelter ( sorry future hikers)

So today sucked, despite the fact that it was gorgeous (70s and sunny)  I'm going to bed without dinner after 13 miles. Shelter is full of cool people and someones playing a flute. I'll prolly wake up at 3 am starving. I hope there aren't too many more days like this. I need to pace myself I guess or I'll get a nasty trail name.
Sigh, goodnight

Hey Roberto querida!!
I am back home and it feels so wierd to open a fridge, put the kettle on and have Moe at my feet! I'm feeling so grateful for the opportunity you afforded me. I knew when I settled in at the hiker's hostel last night that I had made the right decision. Dad will say it is the sensible one...hahaha. I think that is true. My hands totally cracked open and were very painful. My hip is way better but my stomache is still not up to par (but that is my life story!). The people at the hostel were amazing and I enjoyed every minute there. I learned soooo much from all the sources (about 14 hikers there) and the owners are thru hikers and fulll of info and advice. I now understand slacker packing! It is very cool for wimps like me that need a sherpa son hahaha. I hope some of the coolest of these hikers will catch up with you. I'll be in touch here daily and more than ever I hope to catch up with you in the Smokies. You are such an awesome son! I love you soooo much. Sorry for the reverse parenting going on....that's not supposed to happen til I'm 91 lol.
Stay safe. I feel much more assured after doing even that much time with you. You are capable of anything and I know you are sensible enough to slow down when you need to . Last night at the hostel Murry from Australia slept in the bunk below me...we exchanged stories and he said in his darling Aussie accent "wish my mum was as encouraging as you are with your son Rob; mine was not pleased with my decision to do this" Nonetheless he left a book for them that I will mail to Australia for him. I told him that his parents are just worried! He realizes that too. Some others that I met last night that you might encounter are , Quartz (the woman that I took the shuttle with, the slackpacker),Olive Oil, Allison ( from Bar Harbour Maine),John (powerlock, but he will be off the trail for awhile),Richard and Carol (from Ontario...retired couple) a dentist from San Antonio (I forget his name! darn!...he was out of floss so I gave him my trial size ahahaha). So, that's a good start! Love you, missed you the second I sat in the shuttle bus! I have wonderful memories of the the whole trip from Nashville to the Keys to Naples to Amicalola Falls and the many steps til 4:15 on Tuesday.
I'll be waiting to hear that you are feeling better and eating again. Talking to the thru hiker hostel are not eating enough! Especially at night, you need to really fuel up! That's one of the many reasons I was cold plus they told me my big mistake was sleeping with all my clothes on...get right down to the long johns and then the bag will live up to it's full heat potential.
Happy step at a time.

Your mom is such a trooper for trying!!! She is my hero, and one smart lady for getting out while the getting was good. Sounds like an awful day. You have to make it because we're living vicariously through you!
