The trap of a flexible check out time is that you tend to take your time, so we weren't in the car until after 11am this morning. Before we left we had one last visit from Olivier’s mother who arrived with four croissants, a baguette and a very special four leaf clover for each of us. What a beautiful lady!! Heading back into Germany today we took the more scenic route, through a different section of the Black Forest as we were determined to get a glimpse of that gingerbread house. Very frustrating that we again didn’t see it but the scenery was beautiful. The forest on this stretch of road was more dense than we had seen the other day, just as I remembered and as you would expect the Black Forest to be, so perfect.

As we drove on we were rewarded with a view of Switzerland as we were driving along the border. We were unable to fit Switzerland into the itinerary so it was nice to at least be so close that we could see it. As time ticked away we were even more grateful for the gifts from Olivier’s mother as it meant that we only had to stop for a quick toilet break as we already had our lunch. Even so we still only just made our check-in time in Oy-Mittelberg, Bavaria. Serves us right for taking our time this morning.

Oy-Mittelberg was a lovely little town that seemed to be in the middle of no-where, although as we know you are never too far from somewhere when in Germany as it is so populated. They do a fantastic job of having towns that seem very remote though, so it does not really feel all that populated.

As we had been a little pushed for time we didn’t stop to pick up any groceries, so we decided to get takeaway from the one restaurant in town which was a little pizza/pasta place just across the road …. that’s right, Italian.

Before getting dinner though we attempted to find the local shop that sold milk, as we had read about it in the apartments information folder. The wifi wasn’t working to check a map but we thought the town was so small it couldn’t be too hard to find it in the 20 minutes that we had until it closed. Yeah, you know it’s coming ..…. we were wrong, of course we couldn’t find it in time. We managed to find an awful lot of cow poo on the road but not the shop. There is a silver lining though, when we eventually did find it not too long after closing time, we realised what the information booklet may have meant by 'fresha milk‘ – milk straight from the cow!! (That explains the cow poo I guess). Thank goodness we didn’t find it in time because I know that I would have felt obliged to buy it and seriously, who drinks milk straight from a cow?? I’m pretty sure it doesn’t come out low fat!

To make up for the fact that we had no milk for breakfast we ordered an extra meal with dinner and kept the bulk of the pizza for breakfast. Lil and I can manage that for one morning. Then we had a quiet night watching Castaway on DVD – I love hosts who leave things like DVD’s for their guests.
