our plan was to stop at a campsite in malibu and bus in to LA .. but we missed the site so kept going in the hope we could drive to our first port of call The Getty Museum.. this proved to be harder than we thought... at first we followed the 27 mile long sunset blvd from malibu, with very interesting houses, up to the freeway where the museum was but there were road works at the junction we needed and so we got a little lost but did have a glimpse of bel air...very nice properties...
we found the Getty building road in the end, parked in with buses, yes the van is that big...!
we saw Monet, Van Gogh and Turner to name but a few... the garden was very architecturally designed with waterfalls pools and structural pathways ... and a few plants...the view over the city was magnificent and we were lucky enough to have a sunny day although I was amazed at the amount of smog just sitting over the area..
so new plan find another campsite, as to go back to Malibu seemed silly.. it was now getting dark and was rush hour .. we took the freeway and it was chocker with 6 lanes of stationery traffic ... after an hour stuck here we eventually found the campsite in the dark... only to realise we were at the end of the runway of LA international airport...hehe not literally....and right next to a gas works ..smelly or what...!! you can imagine how delighted we were when on top of all this we had no phone reception and no internet...... we laughed.. what else was there to do as we did not sleep much at all.. planes going all night........
a new day and Ian and Jo were arriving in LA from Sydney...sadly we could not contact them and tell them we could see them land from where we were and probably did...lol..
we then did hollywood blvd, sunset blvd and up to griffith park to see the hollywood sign and the observatory... which was free and turned out to be very interesting with space facts and meteorite pieces , rocks from the moon , lunar landing info and all sorts .. a very good 2 hours spent here... Ian phoned us at 2pm to say they had checked into their hotel and so we left the park at 3pm to go to see them...
3 hours later....yes 3 hours to do about 20 miles... the freeway was more blocked than yesterday... in the end we left the freeway and guess what the connecting roads were as bad..what a journey... but we found Ian and Jo at their hotel in Redondo beach and spent a lovely evening with them having a very nice meal and wine and chatting.... and thanks to them we had a place to sleep....!!!..with no planes..
