we continued on the big sur passing more bridge s and bays and extreme coast line... not far down the road is the elephant seal colony ..here a large number of seals have made their homes and the council have provided a board walk to view them from but no getting close... I had a great view from the van and as we had seen seals in NEW Zealand decided not to stop as we were on our way to Hearst castle... an interesting property built by yes Mr Hearst in 1919 when his mother died leaving him the fortune made from gold mining..
It took 28 years for him to complete the project ..well not strictly true as it is still not finished... but anyway 28yrs in the making.. it is castle like and very european in style.. he used the property to entertain famous people such as cary grant in his four guest houses..the main house has a huge reception room, dining room games room and cinema to name but a few..apparently he loved entertaining and playing jokes on his guests...
he had two pools one looked very romanesque ..the other indoor pool was amazing ..a huge gold and blue mosaic pool set under the two tennis courts... we had a great day here really enjoyed the tour and the views over the countryside, as the "castle" is built on a hill with panoramic views all round..
we then continued on the pacific highway which had by now lost all the dramatic scenery ..we drove through morro bay pismo bay and santa maria before stopping at Buelton flying flags campsite just outside santa barbara...
we are so lucky and having such a great time ....
