Where I stayed
first stop was Leggett a small town at the beginning of the state parks.. the first one was Chandelier Drive Thru the Tree park.... and like it says on the tin you drive thru a huge living redwood tree.. we of course were too big in our RVtruck but we walked thru and took pics...
The park has thousands of redwood trees up to 2000 years old and over 350ft...and soo straight and a deep shade of red..awesome trees full of energy and great for hugging..!!
there are many parks up here with differing interests so we chose just to do the 32 mile drive thru Humboldt state park.
next stop was the river bed.. the river Eel runs alongside the redwoods and with the tall trees as a backdrop makes an amazing landscape.. so we found a parking area and walked right down to the river.. like New Zealand the river bed was massive but quite empty compared with the distance between the banks and obviously only gets full in the spring during the melts..
The road takes you thru many cute obscure towns and one such is Scotia.. here the whole town is owned and was purpose built by Pacific Lumber Company... all the people here work for PALCO even the shops, cinema and the churches all have PALCO written all over them..stepford...??
we drove on to Eureka where we stocked up with more stuff ready for our drive into the wilds of Shasta mountain district tomorrow.
