the weather was hot and sticky with a bit of shelter over the pathways but as ever we knew we had loads of kilometres to get under our belt so onwards we drove..122 kms to gladstone..arriving in the evening and parking on top of mount auckland with views over the port and town...
tuesday 17th april
now we have done 550kms....last night some clown decided to pap his horn nice and loud as they passed us at 1am....
we drove on to rockhampton where we crossed the tropic of capricorn now we were really in the tropical weather...we arrived at lunch time giving us plenty of time to go to the free zoo...yes in the park is a zoo with no charge to see koalas, dingos, kangeroos, crocodiles, and our first amazingly colourful cassowary ..it was very interesting and the first time robin had seen the cute chilled out cuddly koalas ...
we drove on to yeppon on the beach to stay in a really nice camp site and spent the evening in the pool...this is the life...!!
today is the big one so we had another swim and breakfast before the long 350kms drive through open bushland and nothingness..
it was all we had dreamed of.....not...a hot, sticky, lonely, desolate, barren, empty and boring road...very harsh dry grassy plains with an odd, mostly leafless, tree...I had to do all I could to keep robin awake he kept drifting off.. luckily half way there is a rest stop with a toilet and little else..but we managed to rejuvenate ourselves a bit..
we arrived in mackay late afternoon and found a little car park right on the beach at ollawong on the side of town...the tide was out and i mean out... i thought the tide at holkam beach in norfolk was the furthest tide i would see..wrong this was amazing you could barely see the water it was so far away.. so after a few pics we settled for the night...
