we had a hot mineral bath before breakfast which was great and then set off to whakapapa village...a ski resort in the volcanic region here... it was an intersting drive though forestry then up the mountain road past mount tongariro which is a volcano and mount ngauruhoe and mount ruapehu which are active volcanoes and smoking...!!

it was excellent landsscape just volcanic rocks no vegetation very barren , in fact they filmed lord of the rings here...the ski resort was very interesting chalets and lifts all deserted and just this barren volcanic landscape... no interest in the summer and we wondering what it would be like in winter it was so uneven it really would need loads of snow to ski down... we had great views of the plateau below and stayed for lunch with a view to doe for...!!

we carried on along the SH4 passing the Makatote viaduct an emense fest of engineering for stretches across the river 80m above the water metal struts taking the railway line across the gorge..

next stop Ohakune which apparently is an awesome lively ski town in winter with shops and bars all over but in summer like a ghost town...we saw signs saying closed until thing that was awesome here was the buskers two guys one on a guitar the other playing the violin they were amazing good and we thought what a strange place to busk...empty town...??... we parked up in a  car park of a local club which was fine and peaceful..

a great day ...
