we carried on the SH5 down into Waimangu valley where the scenery became very volcanic, loads of small flat topped  grassy hillocks with grazing cattle the road twisted and turned until reaching the waimangu village where we had lunch...

continuing through rainbow valley we found an awesome walk up the mountain to the side of one of the volcanoes it was very interesting with black rocks and bolders everywhere... and below an aquamarine hot lake... the edges were steaming a little but it was obvious it was hot as the ground was also letting steam escape, we did try but sadly were unable to get down to the lake but it was still super to see it from above...

we spent the night in Waikite valley hot springs caravan park where the site fee includes full use of all the hot pools...so we had an awesome swim in water 42c when we arrived and the same in the morning... the  5 pools are fed by the hot springs coming out of the ground at 98c 24/7 and have been for over 100 years that is recorded... they are then cooled on huge concrete slabs before being diverted into the pools.. each pool is emptied every night, cleaned and then refilled with more hot spring water full of minerals in the morning...

that was the best stay so far... and as well there was a walk to see exactly where the water comes out of the ground and leaves deposits of many colours . this is the largest hot spring in New zealand and as we watched the water bubble up  it was like having a steam bath, as our photos prove but see if you can see the bubbling water....

awesome day......
