We arrived in Sydney at 9pm on Wednesday 20th, after our 26
hour delay and Ian picked us up. Their flat in Drummoyne is very nice
indeed and as we arrived first bagged the spare bedroom before Mark
and Svetlana, who arrived at 9am the next day.
On Thursday as Ian and Jo were both working the four of us set off to
explore Sydney..we had lunch in a street cafe and then wandered
around the Rocks area and had an afternoon drink in an Irish bar, we
popped in to see Ian at work in the restaurant and then drove back to
Christmas eve was a great day..it was warm and sunny, both Ian and Jo were off work and Ian prepared an awesome prawn and mango salad lunch followed by a tasty evening
BBQ, all outside sat at the harbours edge at the bottom of their
garden, watching the ducks begging for food, listening to the lapping
waves and watching the coming and going of all the privately owned
boats, drinking chilled white wine and chatting...what an unusual and
awesome way to spend xmas eve and one of the best ever...!!!
Then came Christmas day....after swopping presents, we set off to the
beach...Thanks to Jo`s friend, Alana, lending her car for the three
weeks, (for which we are so so grateful...thank you )..the six of us
were able to drive there, us following the youngsters in their
convertible, top down, music on and their hats blowing in the wind,
so funny to watch, as we tried keep up with Ian`s driving...we went
to Coogee beach which is nicer than Bondi actually..the weather was
perfect, the beach was perfect and we all had a perfect swim...an
amazing way to spend xmas day...!!..and it was not over yet..
Late afternoon and evening was spent at Jo`s parents about 40 minutes
drive outside Sydney... a super BBQ with a super family, thank you
Anne and David, we had a super time..
We spent the night at Anne and Davids house and after a lovely
breakfast, thanks again to Anne, we set off back home for what turned
out to be a Boxing day bowling tournament on the WII.... ( by the way
the Australians do not have a boxing day...!!..) which was closely
fought by Ian, Robin and Svetlana..a more restful day..but very
On Monday Ian took the four of us for the Bondi to Watsons Bay walk...a
lovely walk along the headland ending in Watsons Bay for fish and
chips and a view across Sydney out across the heads where the sea
joins the harbour...great walk but not the best fish and chips I have
to say...British is best...!!..
Tuesday,Ian was back to work, so we bought our weekly travel tickets, an
awesome value ticket that allows you to travel on any form of public
transport for the whole week, for $40 each...so we zoomed around the
harbour on the ferrys going from bay to bay, taking pictures of Robin
and the opera house from various angles....lol..it was great
fun...Robin loved the ferrys and wanted to sit on the top deck to
watch the captain drive ..a man thing...!!..
We ended up in Manly which is the trendy beach of the harbour, probably
similar to Miami, not that I have been, pedestrianised areas, trendy
shops and cafes, surfers everywhere, girls scantily dressed etc.
Svetlanas favourite too..however interestingly on this day the beach
was shut due to high winds ..so only a few hardy surfers could be
seen disobeying the orders...!!
So that was our first week in Sydney .. an amazing xmas, great to have
both my boys and their partners together and so pleased to be able to
show Robin around Sydney...Thank you to everyone who made my
My first visit to Australia. Certainly one of the most beautiful
locations you could find with a huge estuary with inlets going off in
operate a bus type service. Jo and Ian generally commute by ferry
which arrives alongside the Opera house and Ian works more or less
directly under the Sydney harbour bridge. That was Christmas … next
the awesome Sydney New Year's eve fireworks – more of that in our
