Left Brisbane on the Pacific Highway with a view to 4 overnight stops before reaching the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney.

First stop was Surfer's Paradise. Australia's Costa del Sol meets Disneyland apparently. (though we haven't been to either so cant comment. Avoided the theme parks and settled for a long walk along the beach. Fairly commercialised  with high rise blocks all along the lengthy beach though quite atmospheric with the sea mist making the buildings disappear and watching the surfers and waves.

Next we drove on to Coffs Harbour which is another reasonable sized resort though much less commercialised. Went for a great walk out onto a small island (Muttonbird Island) with great views for miles of mountains beaches the port and countryside.Had a walk along the beach and took things easy by and in the pool.

Third was Port Macquarie. Another seside resort. The hotel was right by the beach so I recaptured my youth by going in the sea to play in the waves. Just like Cornwall when we were young only the sea was much warmer the waves bigger and it was Emma and not my mum watching anxiously from the beach.

Finally we stopped in a chalet resort in Port Stephens. This was in a wood where the website promised koalas but unfortunately they did not come out to play on our brief stop there.

The driving has been fine although there has been plenty of it. Lots of long straight roads and the Australians in the main keep to the speedlimits. The only exciting moment was just outside Brisbane on the 3 lane highway when it started raining which was a surprise  then it got harder and harder until finally we could not see the car in front and then it got harder still and we couldnt see the front of the car. Most people at that point were pulling onto the hard shoulder if they could see it. Managed to pull in between two big 4wds until it passed but not fun. Some Aussie's must have good eyesite cos they kept on driving thru the storm.

We've seen lots of signs saying look out for kangaroos koalas and horses(!) but all we've seen is one dead kangaroo (not guilty) and a 6ft (at least) lizard/gecko/dragon? who thought it had right of way on a country road.

Still having wonderful time. Thanks for all your emails and messages. Good to hear from you. Will report from Sydney soon.
