We flew direct to Ayers Rock airport and there are free buses to the one and only resort about 12 miles from the rock. The driver confirmed that it was 44 degs when we arrived. Apparently they only get rain 6 times a year but whilst we were sorting out our hotel it bucketed down which was good news because the temperature dropped to the more manageable 33 degs.
There was a minor problem with our room but we got upgraded (free) so we weren't complaining.
We took the shuttle bus to the Rock at 8am the next morning and walked around the base taking lots of photos. It's very impressive. We stayed for a couple of hours which was enough as the temperature was already rising

.The highpoint of the visit was the Sounds of Silence Dinner in the desert that evening. We were taken to a viewpoint and given Champagne and kangaroo/croc canapes whilst watching the sunset over the rock and listening to a didjeridoo player. Very atmospheric and not at all Rolf Harris!!
We had a three course silver service dinner under the desert sky. We were sat with an American couple based in Hawaii and the husband had an astrophysics background so they were hotly debating the star constellations ahead of the professional astronomer's expected talk whilst we discussed whether it was Tues or Weds!!
There was an Australian on the table too who worked at the resort and his droll humour added to the evening.
