What I did
To station with my grandma, 5.30pm flight to Prague, chatting to Czechs for whole journey about Australia and their home country. Met at airport by Lucie & Betty, my Czech friends who worked on the house-keeping team at Lakeside until the end of July. Bus trip into Prague to Bettie's flat and late night chatting to the girls over wine.
Train to Wenceslas Square to meet Krystof for guided tour of city centre. Town square, Charles Bridge, cattle in time for changing of guards, showy ceremony with brass band. St Vitus Cathedral with tiny door in side for prison (?), Wenceslas’ vineyard, across bridge and past Josefov to town square in time for clock to strike on the hour. Lunch in student cafe, bye to Krystof, ticket for Prago Union. To Lucie’s work at kindergarten, 2 hours in Mammut climbing wall out of centre, leading up to 5+
Sleep in while B and L went to work early, in to town for lunch, meeting L’s boyfriend and then to art gallery for Anton Muncha’s The Slav Epic, enormous paintings depicting a narrative of Slavic history. Depth of paintings, lighting and detail of interest, along with similar, haunting stares of focus character in some paintings. Back to B’s to pack before catching bus to South Bohemia, 2 hour trip in darkness. Arrived in Tyn nad Vlatavou, picked up by B’s sister and taken to family home in nearby village, fried trout for dinner, singalong of Czech songs with B’s dad on guitar. Attempt to play didge unsuccessful, guitar until late.
Excursion to forest near Cesky Krumlov for treetop walk, usually great views but none with heavy fog, wobbly bridges. Ride on bobsled on 1km track, up to ~50km/h with B’s 9 year-old brother. Snoozing on long car trip back, dinner and early night while the others went to dancing class, catch up with B’s local friends.
Restful morning at home while family went to church, walk into town with L, coffee and wedding photos at B’s sister’s place, in block of many formerly grey, now very colourful flats. Lunch, showing photos of Aust and shown photos of family’s USA trip, bus trip back to Prague with some daylight views of countryside and forests
Realised I’d left coat with B’s family.
Out shopping with L, bought new soft-shell jacket. Shopping for ingredients for curry, made for lunch. To Vyserhrad, met Marie (another of the Czechs from Lakeside) and went back into central Prague for a chat and a beer in a cafe.
Shown onto bus by B, to Apple Repair store to get iPod and laptop fixed, only to find 3 day turnaround and expensive diagnosis without repair. To Josefov, wandering around near Jewish cemetery, in Old-New Synagogue (oldest building in Jewish quarter and one of Europe’s oldest synagogues). Visited ISIC point only to find that it could only make ISIC cards for Czech students - arrrrrgh why didn't I get one when I was in the UK!???
To L’s work, Kampa Museum’s strange sculptures. To Namestie Republiky, Powder Tower and Museum of Communism - excellent displays on life under communism, communist propaganda, the Stalin Monument in Prague, the Velvet Revolution and Vaclev Havel’s involvement and a harrowing display of photos and truth from North Korea. Slovakian lunch at B’s, back into town for walk around Prague Castle with the girls. Heard very ocker Aussie accent, so approached and chatted to tour guide from Melbourne, living in Prague two years working for NGO - great chatting to an Aussie after over a month without. With B to climbing wall, couple of hours with her and Krystof. Managed to lead V+ and B finished, unclipping, a V- she’d failed last week
Very lazy day after late night at Cross Club. Played guitar, looked at photos etc with B and L, Skyped Mum with the girls very shy. Packing heavy bags.
Apologies for the brief nature of this entry, I'm having trouble remembering when I did everything, as all the days are kind of blending into one as I travel.
